Interior architect Frederic Kielemoes’ work is characterised by an interplay between seemingly contrasting opposites. In a similar way, the duality of his family’s roots can be read in his projects, which blend Italian design flair with Belgian subtlety. The resulting body of work is rich and layered with attention for materials, colours and detailing.
Starting his practice in the late nineties, Frederic’s portfolio now covers various scales and extends from residential projects, to offices and retail spaces. ‘The size of the projects is not what motivates me, what truly drives me are requests that spark my curiosity, such as an interesting context or a spatial challenge.’
Frederic is a longstanding admirer of Belgian Geometric Abstract Art, with key artists such as Gilbert Decock, Marc Verstockt and Dan Van Severen. In their formal language, basic shapes such as the circle and the square are strongly present. Frederic's designs often start with a similar elementary approach, before they get sculpted into refined, three-dimensional environments.
Frederic prefers to work in close contact with his clients on the one hand, and the contractors and craftsmen on the other. To hone his knowledge, he can regularly be found on site and in workshops. ‘My aim is to understand the limits as well as the endless possibilities of materials and techniques, to come to the most elegant solutions.’
