Townhouse S
Kortrijk - 2022
The central question in the reconversion of this period townhouse was: which precious elements to reveal and which ones to hide. Elements of historic and aesthetic value such as the timber beams and historic heaters were left in view, others were even specifically accentuated to underline their presence into the interior that now blends old and new.
‘From a heritage point of view we had to preserve the original rear walls, which were integrated within the larger footprint of the 18th century townhouse. We were allowed to hide these walls, but instead of covering them up, the decision was taken to reveal them. The old stones and infill bricks show traces of the past. The former door openings in the walls were lined with a fine metal plate in black lacquer, resembling a portal-like structure. They literally frame the past.’
